My first thought was defective part, second was "what does the cap look like", third was vibration. I wasn't thinking that the coil could do this unless you were connected up to an arc welder. Jeez talk about chasing gremlins.
I will be down to boat later today and will be able to answer some of these questions. I asked this question elsewhere and was told worn out distributor gear. Thoughts?
In my experience as an automotive mechanic and on land 5.7 vortecs. I've dealt with vans/trucks that would get severe misfires under load or flat out wouldn't start, and the rotor would have a hole in the centre contact but never completely missing. on one occasion the vehicle came back the next week with the same problems. the distributor gear was worn out and teeth were like knives, it allowed the shaft to drop enough that it wasn't contacting the cap and the constant arcing blew another hole through. something to look into atleast. can spin the shaft by hand and atleast see if there is a ton of backlash between teeth (non scientific but if its a ton you'll know something is up)
Wildboating needs a break! For cripes sake. Maybe we should start a go fund me page and help this poor guy out. When the problem is ultimately found out and straightened out, what will be the value to all? Not that this would EVER happen to anyone else (GOD FORBID) but just the knowledge would be worth something, right?
I’m moving the boat today, out of Cleveland to Sandusky. There has to be someone out there who can help. Any suggestions for mechanics out there? Sadly, this means for about the 5th time starting over with a new shop and new mechanic.
I decided to roll the dice and move the boat to Sandusky. I kept rpms under 3700 and she absolutely purred for 2 1/2 hr ride. Arrived and no cracked manifold. Now here is the kicker, I went through water system and plumed water through entire system before taking her out with the new manifolds. It did not crack this time. Was it dry and over heating the manifold before the chilly lake water pressurized and sprayed the manifold? Or is this a issue with turning 4500 rpms which the boat is now able to achieve? Time will tell.
Hi Wild, I’m in Marblehead so I don’t know the guys in Sandusky as well. Every mechanic is swamped right now from the late start. We store for the winter at Craft Marine in Sandusky and while I’ve not used their mechanics I’ve heard good things. Have you considered marine max in port Clinton? I’ve always heard very good things about them.
They are one of my considerations liberty. I have a lot of choices now, let’s see how she does over the next few days. I permanently relocated for the season. Like i said, she ran flawlessly today.
Any my recommendations for a wet sand, buff and polish. Time for me to address some non motor needs with the boat.
Your next to crossview, that is where I winter store & they do all of my engine maintenance. I’ve nothing but positive experience with them. I’m down at the Venetian, Son Rise is a very nice marina. All 3 are part of the Hoty family
@Wildboating do you run a high pressure or high volume oil pump on your engine(s)?
if so... those things can do more harm than good sometimes... specifically to the nose ring of a camshaft- the one that sets against the pumps pinion. it can cause all grades of grief to a distributor shaft too- to the point many builders who intend to use a high volume pump drill a port in the back of the valley specifically to provide more oil to the pumps gear and dizzy gear.

Nothing has been looked at yet. Im at work, trying to make pennies to pay for all these dollar bills.

sadly that is not the case. Boat has always ran at 3600 rpm flawlessly. The reason for this thread is what happens when trying to exceed that rpm.

Can you get to Margaritaville by boat?
