I officially passed on the 270 today that we have been talking about. I took everyone's advice to heart and when they wouldn't make the repairs to make it right I decided to move on. Please let me know if you see any good deals out there in this size range. I'm itching to join the Rinker club.
Major- my thread when I bought my boat has 2000 views on it- I got so much advice, some from a couple of grew guys no longer on the forum ( miss your comments tikihut) , be patient, the right deal all come along, it will work out and all will be good!

You made the right move.. batteries are the easiest thing to make sure they are good, if the seller isn't willing to do that, it's a huge red flag.
we actually as a group never seen the boat ... i feel you were fair in describing ... 2006 is a good year .... it sounded like trouble $ problems ... it sounded odd ... and the out drive/surveyor really scared me ... fixing and tinkering is fun and enjoyable ... but when it gets beyond 1's means both know how and cash ways ... it just sucks keep the faith ... keep looking ...

I tried finding your old discussion, could you send me the link for it?

I found the link for you, was not really suggesting it was a great read or a much of useful info- point was throw these boats up and listen to the suggestions and hopefully the group will help steer you to a decent boat- you wont find a better hull for the money.
If you were a year earlier or even a year earlier than that I knew of 3 different 270s that were for sale. But I don't know any personally right now for sale. Every now and then Jonathan Fosters on route 2 has one for sale. I'd also say take a look at the older 310s. I used to own one and they are a fantastic boat!
Good choice Major, I'm going into my 3rd season with my 2006 270. Boat has been great. I paid 34k for it. When I bought it I changed the batteries, and impeller. The cone clutch failed at about 475 hours, that cost me $1600. No other issues besides regular maintenance. As part of maintenance I also replaced the bellows, shift cables and trim tab sensors. Find a good boat to start with, but always be ready for something to go wrong. I run the merc 350. No a speed demon but can cruse at 30 mph fairly loaded.
The seller came back to me today with an offer of $19k. The surveyor went back out and checked the listing issue and said there are no problems that it appears the extra battery and empty fresh water tank are causing the issue. So the big ticket items looks like the engine code and the alternator not charging. Should I still walk away?
That is a tough call. What was the original asking price for the boat? It seems that all of the ones in that year are $10-12k more than this one. My 280 has a list to the port side due to 3 batteries and the fresh water tank being on that side. IF you don't mind doing some work, it might be a great buy. Just be prepared to DO some work and spend some money on her.
BTW, where is the boat located at and listed at? Would be nice to see some pics.

Ah I forgot to mention that... the freshwater tank makes all the difference... I always keep mine topped off so it balances out. 19k huh? what was the original offer?
19k w/trailer? What do you think it's worth,if you(and I do mean you) fix things up to 100%? I just bought a neglected boat and it's not just money it a lot of time.I know cosmetic things can wait but mechanical things have to be right for safety and so you blow things up.I add up your time and possibly parts?? Come up with a total add a couple of grand.
There is some satisfaction in taking something and making it better, probably the last 6 boats I bought needed lots of work, which I do not mind, since the purchase price was discounted. Buy it, if you do not like or mind DIY projects, or spend the extra 10k And buy one ready to go. Like renneechris many of us have the time and talent, not so much money, and take an older boat, refresh it, and end up with a nice vessel. Are you ready to spend the next 6 weekends working on that boat getting it ready for summer? and a few thousand ?
I'm handy with just about everything except the engine. I don't know what it would cost for the engine repairs. I could likely repair everything else myself for $1k assuming worst case, i.e. new GPS, new horn, new fuel sending gauge, longer cables for moving battery. The GPS would just be a $400 unit. I suspect another $400 on redoing some of the vinyl. I have a guy for that. So $1400 plus fixing alternator and the open code on the engine. When it's done and cleaned and everything probably worth $25k.
On a side note, after things are in running order; I would add a fridge to the deck level, led lights along the v berth in the cabin. Possibly add an amp and subwoofer, add fender holders, add a cabinet door under the deck sink and probably some lights to the under side of the radar arch. I could do all those things myself unless I found someone who could do them cheaper than my time is worth.
On paper(or screen for this), it looks like it could be a really good deal. You know that there are some issues. Knowing up front is better than finding out after the fact. If you are willing to take the risk knowing that there are some issues that need fixed, I would seriously consider buying it. That is just my opinion...

Well, that's a tough call. If you, and your family, don't mind you working on it for some weekends and then maybe losing some time thru the summer for other repairs, then go for it. It's no guarantee that any boat isn't going to have problems after you buy it.
I would for sure have someone that can really check the motor and out drive out and if that is good, dive in. I know that alternator is not cheap - it can't be a 99.00 one from autozone- it has to be marine. Also, did you not post earlier that he alternator had been changed? Rest of the stuff is elbow grease- motor and out drive is what your buying...
