Thanks for that @Trashman When I wanted a new fire extinguisher earlier this year that's precisely why I didn't buy a Kidde even though we get a good deal through work. Didn't like the feel of the cheesy plastic handle. Went with a Garrison.
Most of us often opt for the deal, nothing wrong with that. As a consumer, we should expect safety products to be reliable. Especially on a boat! This unfortunately is gonna cost kidde a ton of money. I hope no one goes to grab one of these and it fails.
Thanks for posting. I have four recalls (one on the boat, three at home).
It was easy: Call 855.271.0773 (open weekends too) Tell them the model / serial numbers They ship replacements, and instructions to dispose of the recalls
If you have ANY Kidde fire extinguishers with plastic handles, don't rely on the web site to figure it out whether they are bad. Just gather them all up and call Kidde.
Readers -- share this info with your local boating community. Kidde fire extinguishers have been sold by West Marine and other boat supply stores for decades, so a lot of boats have them.
I agree with a comment from one of the news stories: a defective fire extinguisher is worse than no fire extinguisher.
ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 6, 2017—More than 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers equipped with plastic handles, some on the market for more than 40 years, have been recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”
Thanks Trashman for valuable safety info. I haven't checked my boat yet, but one out of three at my house is a Kidde. The other two are First Alert, which I don't see listed but they have plastic handles too.
I went to the boat today and brought back the 2 from there, according to the listing the M110GM is one of the units as well as my 2 red H110G's at home. So I punched in the models, serial numbers and dates and got a screen telling m e these were unaffected. Huh? I thought they all were in these ranges, the recall notices suggest as such, not that there is a limitation of production runs etc. So now I have a confidence issue as to these units so the 1800 number they offered to call will be called Monday to get some clarity.
So just had a call with Kidde and yes, these are on the recall list. The guy had no clue why when logging via the website it said not affected and his system said they were. 4 units to be shipped out.
As @LaRea suggested, call them in but if you do enter via the web site and it tells you not affected, call in anyway on the 1855 number they give you.
I just called, I have 3 that are affected. 2 in the house and one on the boat. I didn't bother looking them up online, I just called. Use this number, 855-271-0773 .
Between 2 houses, a camper and the boat I have seven Kidde fire extinguishers. Only three are under recall. One of the 5 pound models was a "pro" version with a metal handle and pin, so no problem. The 2 from my boat are OK apparently although the plastic lever looks the same as the recalled models which seems odd. The person who answered my call was very helpful and the process was fairly easy, except the model numbers are in a tiny font and hard to read, so have a magnifying glass handy!
I asked about First Alert and was told they are not part of this recall.
