Cruisers 390 with Diesel in big seas

Looking at a 2007 Cruisers 390 with V drive Volvo D6 diesels. Not much out there on how it will ride. Anyone on here ever been on one in big seas? We are looking for a nice comfortable ride in chop or 5 ft Lake Erie close waves similar to our friends sea ray 40 da with Cummins. I’ve not rode on a Rinker 41 with v drive in big waves to compare to a Rinker. Thanks!

    A buddy of mine just sold his 3672 (same hull as the 390).  He has lots of experience on the Chesapeake Bay, which gets brutal steep chop like what you're describing.  He said "the boat will handle 4-6 foot seas but those onboard would not."

    Thanks, any more clarity? The crew is not happy because it’s wet, or bouncey, or it’s a great ride the crew just doesn’t like the bad weather scene?

    Mainly because of the bounce.  I know my boat can handle more than the crew can.  I've had her in some pretty good size waves in the ocean (into them, they went up and over bow with splash over hard top...with them, some of crew didn't feel so well).  Was not a problem for the boat...

    That’s guys, I’m going to take this as good news. I’m comparing it to my friends sea ray 40 da with diesels and I’m being told that it will ride the same in chop and big waves which is good with me, his boat rides very nice. I won’t be able to sea trial prior to purchase so trying to make sure ride will be good. Thanks again

    boat handling in big seas is determined by weight and size.
    overall length 
    and beam.
    bigger the better.
    like the saying : no replacement for displacement

    Perfect! She is the same length, width and weight as the Ray we are comparing her to so that works well!

    The Sea Ray 40 foot hull is quite different from the Rinker 40 foot hull. IMO, having been in both in seas of five plus feet there is quite a difference. IMO the Rinker hulls, as some have said, have greater height then slope down a bit at the bow. A Rinker EC 360 or EC 400 or series 400/410 hulls have HUGE headroom in their forward cabins. In the rear sleeping area and shower it is over SEVEN feet. At the front berth it is at least 6'6". I am 6'6" tall and can sit up WITH plenty of headroom in the 350/360/400/410 series Rinkers. My friends' (I have two with sea ray 400 series) Sea Rays have no where near the head room in the forward cabin area and a much narrower forward berth area - this is because the front bow is flared out a LOT. This is meant for offshore running. As said by others on this forum, a Rinker hull will outlast the occupants as the hull is super strong but NOT IMO designed for heavy seas running comfort as its bow sides are steep (more room) whereas the Sea Ray has deeply swept front bow sides (considerably less forward berth room) but IMO significantly better rough seas comfort due to the water shedding front bow. Bottom line: unless I was doing a LOT of rough seas running it would be a Rinker hands-down for me because of the vast extra room. Cheers to all from Turks and Caicos MT.

    Lib, I looked at the same boat but had the big blocks. It was nice but it needed a lot of work and there were several water leaks. Turned out it was a repo. Admiral loved the cabin area. Post survey results asap

    I've been in a lot of those two head boats and they always have twin beds that aren't true twin bed size.  They are considerably smaller.  I'd have a hard time buying a boat under 46 ft that have two heads.  You lose too much space in the aft cabin with the extra head.

    Try sitting up on the front berth of a 400 series SR. Unless you are pretty short you will be on the ceiling.

    Even comparing my 2001 242 to my cousins 2007 240 SR there was a HUGE difference in size. My rinker had so much more headroom in the cabin and much more useable space up on the deck. Whenever my cousin was on the Rinker, he would say the same.

    You really see the difference with these pictures.

    My 342 is middle boat. In the top pic there is an SR 340 to my right, she is to my left in the bottom pic. Other side of me is an SR 40. The 340 is a taller boat than me for sure but I never had any headroom issues in the 342....

    We are wrestling with that. 700 miles. She is 10 miles up a river through a lock. Right now all in costs of trip and truck are really the same. Leaning towards truck just to get her home, weather in May could trap us for days.... but we are buying her to be able to do trips like this!

    700 miles is a long way on a new boat. Pretty steep learning curve. The truck may be the most stress free way. Plus they can do in April or sooner depending on how the sea trial goes

    Exactly, I will be a total basket case. Volvo tech is doing sea trial with me in April so we should see any issues but it’s a long run for a new to me boat, only has 380 hours. Also it is very dusty and dirty so we would have to dock and clean for a day to start the trip. Good news is that I got the owners service records and they are awesome. Annual detailed spreadsheet just like I do. Very comforting. Volvo tech is plugging in to the engines next week for more info...

    Apparently, you can keep posting even though no Rinker in your fleet.
    I'm in the same boat (lol) on a Four Winns currently.

    Someone said, technically - you are between Rinkers & are allowed to stay on the forum.
