@Grahamu cool boat - include that stand up board in the offer!

I've watched a bunch of looper boat type stuff on YouTube. Even seen a couple boats go by my work office in real time. Any idea of what the est cost would be to do the full loop with dock fees, fuel, etc??? I have no idea but my 1st guess would be like $30K?

  • @mattie, difficult to put a number to it, so many variables. size and type of boat, one or two engines, HP, anchoring out or staying in marinas. There's a couple on You Tube, Scho and Jo, just about to complete the loop and they are averaging just under CDN$5000 a month. My budget will be a higher as I always build in contingency funds and also we will have a higher fuel burn.

@Grahamu are you going to go counter-clockwise? Would you start this year (once you take possession of the boat) or wait until next summer?

  • @YYZRC, yes you go counter-clockwise to make use of the river currents from Chicago to Mobile, AL. Hoping to start sometime early August this year.

'What Yacht To Do' is another YouTube channel that is pretty good about the loop. Saw them go by last year. Unique looking boat.

$5K/mth not bad at all.....if you say it fast. lol

  • Looping counter-clockwise means that during the spring tornado season, you are on the east coast, away from tornados.  And during the fall hurricanes, you are on the inland rivers.  Summer up north, winter down south -- 12 months of avoiding bad weather.

It's around 6000 miles.  If you can average 2 mpg in a fuel-sipping trawler, you'll spend $15k on fuel.  In a big planing boat, double that (or more).
  • I just spent the last hour reading about the Great Loop. Sounds amazing and safe. Looks like you have a perfect boat for the journey. Enjoy the trip!
  • @mattie - in US bucks that's $45k/year, which is a model of frugality.  One could easily spend three times that amount.  It all depends on the boat, how early you want to arrive at your destination, and how often you want to stay in marinas rather than anchoring out.

I hope you will put up more pictures when you take possession...especially the engine room...heck all of them!

Congrats. Will be a trip to remember..
  • @halifax212, Another loop is called the Down East Loop which comes right by Halifax.
Do able in a summer, here's a link:

  • @mattie and @LaRea, I am attaching a spread sheet of the couples expenses so far with February to be posted at their crossing of their wake. At the bottom in blue is my best guess budget, at this point. If I stayed home we would spend more so a win win for us.

Given the state of the rental market in the GTA, it looks like you could rent out your house for the duration of your trip and make a small profit!

  • @YYZRC, That is the plan to rent our condo for a year and that's another spread sheet of assets, income and expenses that I keep.
  • I like the spreadsheet.  Thank you for providing.  Servicing is maintenance?  Also curious about housekeeping and shore visits. The blue looks like some good estimations.  I would definitely be a bit higher, like you have, for the marinas.

We've always wanted to do the loop, but my mind might just change to doing the east coast and Bahamas (& possibly BVI).  Still not sure about what we'd do with our house.  Not sure I'd want to rent it (maybe one of our kids would stay in it).  We still have a few years, but it is nice to look and start thinking about so that I can make it happen when the time is right.

Would love to see pics and how things go for you as you go along.  I remember seeing our old member "Salt Shaker" in the Chesapeake as him and his wife went thru during his loop in the 342.  It was neat to see the provisions he made to his boat for the loop.  Was also great buying them some drinks and dinner!

  • @Dream_Inn, Servicing is normal maintenance with one haul /out/in for any bottom work. Their housekeeping is mainly for doing laundry, transportation is to and from supermarkets and other stores. Marina costs also include paid mooring balls which average $25/day. Might be down your way in May to do a viewing, I'll let you know.
  • @Grahamu definitely let me know if you are in the area.  In May, a boat ride is a must!😉

I found a looper accessory. Not great if you want to bring a dinghy, though.

heard those tubs are good for constipation. Might be helpful for a looper pooper.

(lot of tripping hazards on that boat too)
