I’ve heard that one, as my sister-in-law used to own a home on Kelley’s. Originally from Ohio, corn was our big thing! I couldn’t tell you how many meals I had growing up that was just cobs of corn. Never would you open up a can of corn and call it dinner! 😋
Three pix for today. This has NOT been a good month for propeller blades on M/V LaRea, but they make interesting stories!
A couple weeks ago, debris got into the bow thruster and destroyed both props. That's a kilo-buck to fix: $200 for new props and $800 for a short haul to install them!
Next up -- our Williams 280 tender, which is a jet boat, had some damage to the impeller so we had to replace it. This pic doesn't LOOK horrible, but blade damage causes air bubbles in the water stream that cools the engine, so it can lead to overheating. Another kilo-buck down the drain!
And now the pix that will make you cringe: in Lake Saint Clair, the planet Earth jumped out and struck my props, destroying both of them beyond repair. The boat is out of the water until my new props arrive, hopefully by next weekend. Don't ask me to describe what happened ... the memory is too painful!
Impeller and propellers….definitely need both on a boat for them to work. Chris, I sure hope you’re getting good waxing in while it’s pulled. Heck, save money to pay for those props by making your own shoulders sore 😀. Here is my pic from yesterday
@LaRea, sorry to hear of the prop troubles. On the bright side, looks like hull and shafts of the M/V LaRea are nice and clean and (visually) free of damage.
Kilo-bucks. I suppose since the M/V LaRea (Maritimo) is Australian, the boat bucks are counted in metric, lol?
@LaRea Not to beat it to death. What do you figure you hit in Lake St Clair? Mostly sand/clay bottom. Unless pilings or some sort of man made structure.
It was a rock shoal near Jefferson Beach. The locals all know it's there. I would have been fine at 8 knots, but I throttled up at exactly the wrong time. "That's all I have to say about that."
A good friend and fantastic Maritimo captain sent this pic to make me feel better, and it did. See if you can spot any damage other than the propeller. The damage was rumored to be nearly $200k.
A friend of a friend on a 1.2 million boat just paid 80k to have the entire AC system replaced to newer better equipment. He decided when it was done to take the boat out with the repair guy just to go for a ride. He ended up running into a rock shoal and did what your picture looks like above. Yikes 😳
Getting new Teignbridge props from England would have taken 3-4 months, meaning we'd have to winterize here in Detroit and be homeless (boatless) until April. To shorten a VERY long story, I was able to fit a pair of US-made props, but only by doing some creative engineering. We're back in the water, and I'll find out tomorrow how they perform.
Guess where I got the props ... new old stock at GLS! They were built in 2013 for Tiara, and somehow GLS ended up with them. We rented a van and drove 5 hours to Wisconsin to pick them up.
