Wow that is alot scale. Be interesting to see how much better it runs.
I think it will help a lot. When I was cleaning it out, I could feel that I was opening up the areas. I’m sure there wasn’t any flow there.

I heard back from the machine shop. Aside from the damaged valve, they found a bent valve as well. I asked if it was the #1 cylinder, he’s going to ask his worker who disassembled it. I prepped and painted the intake this morning. I also had a new MAP sensor that I never used so I replaced it. It looked pretty gummed up so was probably ready to be cleaned or changed.

You going to pull the heads off the other motor to check?

@captkevin , the starboard motor has been running good. I do know that the heads were replaced on that engine before I bought the boat.

How many hours you have on those engines? Can you read the hours per RPM range off the ECM?

@Ian yes, I can read the hours per RPM range. I looked a couple months ago but didn’t write down the information. About 350 hrs since they were rebuilt.

The heads are finished, I’m going to pick them up on Monday. Machine shop said I had a total of 4 valves that were bad. He couldn’t tell me which heads they were from because they only found out while they were cleaning them.

With enough money one could install closed loop cooling along with aluminum heads/intake/block

When I went shopping for our 270, 1st was has to be closed cooling and 2nd was the genset. Number 2 has not paid  off.  I'm not sure it would be "with enough money" to get there. Would be an interesting  project to look at. Two motors those does present a multiplier.

Any idea why you would have so many bad valves?

That’s why I asked about hours per RPM range. I have 800 hours on my twin 5.0 MPI’s with no major work (so far). But my hours above 3k are fairly low. I think @aero3113 runs high a lot.

It all could’ve happened when they ate the spark plugs. But when that happened only 2 plugs were bad.

Didn't you have a manifold that was beginning to fail?  Perhaps hot valves didn't appreciate cold water ..or salty water
  • aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
    No @PickleRick, manifolds are good.

I thought you had replaced manifolds previously as you heard an audible change to the motor or was this your previous boat?
  • aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Wasn’t me @PickleRick . Wouldn’t there be visible rust on the valves if the manifolds were leaking?

For some reason I thought I sent you those 3/8 rods to change the manifolds on the 342 not long after you got it.

A minor leak in the manifolds, not enough to cause water in the oil, could cause corrosion/deterioration of the valve and or valve seat.

I thought you had gotten them as you started to hear an audible or felt a difference in performance.  This could have sped up the wear of your valves.

@PickleRick , when you sent me those rods, I changed out the manifolds due to corrosion. (it's a 330)

I picked up the heads this morning and saw the bad valves. The one is obvious with the missing piece. The second one is bent and the other two are tuliped. Hopefully start installing everything this week. Of course my home heating oil tank decided to start leaking so the company is here today to replace it.

Agree @captkevin , excited to see how she runs. Too bad I have to wait till next season to run her up to speed!

Going to be a long winter of waiting - supposed to be in mid 80's here in Chicago today. But they say it could be the last day in 80's for us.

Curious, what is included in the "rebuild" for $325? Did they replace all the valves or just the ones that are out of spec?

@YYZRC just the ones out of spec. Cleaned, decked and the valves reinstalled. I’m assuming that the seats were inspected also and would’ve been replaced if needed.

Way cheaper then buying new or re-manufactured heads.

I ended up getting the gaskets from Amazon. Seem like great quality and look like OEM.
