I soak mine in vinegar for about 15 minutes, give a light scrub and wash with soapy water. they come out very nice. Then I give them a coat of polish/wax

Re: Removing drives, engines and transom assemblies.
Skin has been removed from inside transom, wood is solid. Added some warm air in the area to help the drying process, probably 3 to 4 weeks.
