A single signal wire, spliced to make two different wires (one to each amp), coming from the head unit would be the correct set up.

This wire is low amp, as @LaRea describes is just to kick on the internal relay to turn the amp on.  Think of the small wire going from your starter switch to the starter solenoid.  The big wires are doing all the work, the little one just tells them to start or stop
