Careful @Aqua_Aura -- the idea will stick in your head and take over your life! I would never have imagined how much effort it takes to find the right boat and negotiate a deal. In the past two years, I doubt a day has gone by when I didn't view at least one boat listing.
@GMSLITHO -- We'll run outside as much as possible. I need to hustle her up to Hampton, and then get my butt back to work. Baby needs a new radar!
Yes I understand the take over your life search, we have actually been searching hard for a new boat and after last week the search is getting much more serious. We are going next week to look at one that meets the criteria. The market is so limited lately so we'll see what happens.
One of my pet peeves is boaters who run with VHF antennas slanted back at a sporty angle, like fishing outriggers. (Antennas must be vertical to work correctly.) Well, you'll be relieved to know that those masts are not antennas. They are just for decoration!
Are you going to keep them up or take them off? Strange that they’re just for show! I’m sure they pivot but why worry about having to reposition them. But to be honest, they look awesome! 👍🏻
Well you are not your typical boring, rich a$$ engineer. Maybe rich a$$ but not boring. Again congratulations were all happy for ya. It's an stressful ordeal until you find what you want. Then negotiate the deal. What do you anticipate your travel speed will be?
Hahaha ... forget the rich a$$ part. We didn't buy this boat out of leftover pocket change. After two long careers of hard work and saving (EDIT: and we never had children), this is our forever boat. But I agree it won't be boring!
Should cruise around 25 knots. I won't push her until we establish an intimate relationship. In the sea trial, she hit 30 knots at WOT. Not too shabby for a 28-ton vessel.
Jesus. Okay here we go. I will gladly take care of her for you.. will motor her back and fourth to Florida, and all I need is a crew cabin to crash in. Off the boat when you are headed to the boat, watching over her when you are not. Will fit in nicely with the plan of having a remote job!
Miami to Charleston is about 500 miles at that speed it's 17.4 hours, So I'm assuming you will dock for the nite and finish the trip on the second day. 25 knots equals 28.75 mph that's very fast cruse speed for a 50 footer, and 28 tons. The average cruse ship speed is 20 knots or 23 mph. It's all interesting. Since most of my boating has been in lakes and rivers. Next week I'm spending on a lake fishing that's 13 miles long. Haha
Hope you pick up some tips from the boat captain. I sincerely hope for you, No breakdowns, and safe travel.
@randy56 - a lot of it is no-wake speed and waiting for bridges to open. Or we can run offshore if the weather cooperates, but there's still some slow cruising getting to/from the inlets. Best case with no weather delays, I think it will take three 8-hour days to reach Charleston, then another two days to Hampton.
Yea I assumed that those were outriggers LR, could the be used for fishing or are they really non functional decoration? They do look cool!
Hey now! We keep or VHF slanted back most of the time so we don’t have to raise and lower it each time we leave our marina! We have a 15’ bridge it won’t clear. 😉😁
Ok @Liberty44140, I'll allow it! (And honestly, it only makes a difference when you're talking to somebody far away or using a handheld.)
Can't use the masts for fishing because there's no way to spread them, so I think they really are just for decoration. But they will make one heck of a platform for lights at our July 3rd parade of lights!
Haven’t been back to this site for a few days, so what a surprise to see the unveiling of the new LaRea this morning. What a gorgeous yacht. I think we’re all in for some good stories. Keep them coming. Congratulations!
More fun facts. The boat has a 17-kilowatt generator, and I'm pretty sure I'll need to run it any time we're off the grid. The refrigerators probably don't even have the option of battery power. The deep freezer in the cockpit definitely doesn't. And she has five (count 'em, five) air conditioners. If all five all running, she's using 6-7 kw of power.
She does have a 2-kw inverter, but I think it only runs the engine room lights and a few outlets. I have much to learn about this boat!
I like it! What size are the fuel tanks? This trip will certainly help you see how far the fuel goes (as well, I'm sure, on many other things with the boat). At least you remembered to put "Diesel" in it! (that pump has seen better days)
What a spectacular day! We ran on the outside from Miami to Port Canaveral, which is right around 200 miles. Left the fuel dock at 7:45 after pumping 460 gallons, and got here at 3:15, so 7.5 hours at 24 knots the whole way. It was lumpy for the first couple hours, but then it laid down a little bit. She holds 680 gallons, and we pumped 420 gallons when we arrived here at Sunrise.
So, yeah it's a big thirsty boat, but not compared to the guy next-door!
