Thanks guys! im still on the fence of whether i should lay the vinyl as one piece or cut the pieces on the seat box fronts separate so those lines will be parallel to the top of the seat cushions. Im now thinking that the vertical faces of the seats should be stained and varnished and just keep the vinyl on the floor
Next job is to remove the head wall for its varnish coats, and while that's out i can run the new waste lines. im also thinking that i could use the vinyl on the head floor because right now its a white fiberglass shell, im just figuring out the drain in the foot well and do i glue the vinyl directly onto the floor or maybe lay a wood floor first because of the step where the toilet will sit could be a stained vertical facing like the rest of the
I agree that the vertical sections look better stained/varnished. You really are doing a great job with the boat and very nice watching the progression with pictures! It sounds like you are really enjoying the time with your boat and I'm betting your son is going to enjoy it just as much in the spring! I was a bit older, but I remember when my mother had passed and my dad took the time and we redid the engine in my old streetrod (that we originally did in my early teens). Something I'll never forget and I still have that old truck (gonna give it to my son some day soon).
Thanks Dream, i am enjoying it and learning a lot about my boat and how it all works! also glad to hear that she is looking good because i'm very critical of my own work.
Hey Britinusa, Your boat is really looking good. I agree with Dream Inn the vertical sections look really nice stained. I also like seeing your progression in pictures, very interesting. Keep up the great work can't wait to see the finished product. Although I've found that with owning a boat there is never a finished product.
Thanks Golfdog, A little more progress today,I removed the home made seat that the PO attached to the transom, i also reversed the engine room hatch because it had been refitted twice and there are so many holes that i need to patch, so i reversed it and i can now stand at the transom and open it which is better. Im also going to install a round access port in the hatch so i can access the battery switch without opening the hatch. My roof windows still leak badly despite the 300 lbs of silicone sealant! and parcel tape the PO used! That should have done the trick right?? As soon as my boat is wrapped i will work on building new windows So job list as it stands today 1. Lay padding and Vinyl 2. Install waste tank, lines and toilet 3. fill holes in transom 4. Install taller anchor navigation light as mine is only visible from the front when the Bimini is up 5. Install GPS and maybe a new transducer 6. Install anchor winch. 7. Install trim tabs indicator display Maybe after all that i may get be able to get some actually using her!
Heres the transom with the seat gone, i have some rust marks that dont seen to want to come off easy, and a bunch of old holes both in the transom and the floor that need cleaned up and blending in, im not sure how to correct this section yet, any advice is welcomed!
For the rust stains you should try muriactic acid (be careful with that stuff) but it won't hurt the gelcoat. As far for the holes nothing complicated with Fiberglass and gelcoat if the floor is non skid there is a trick how to reproduce the texture but if you put a seat over it it does not matter. if you need more info on fiberglass and gelcoat and texture let me know. Paul
Thanks for the Muriatic acid tip, i have never done fiberglassing before, but i have watched lots of threads of people doing it, i will need some advice on which gelcoat to get and how to do it properly.
Thanks Frenchship, this will be a job for the spring as the boat wrapped yesterday. Current job is the table, I have refinished the teak surround and now I'm working on the center, I'm planning on sanding the white melamine and gluing down a paper veneer with a wood inlay (i printed the inlay out to get an idea)
Worked on the table a little today, cut the veneer top, the new top will get a varnish only as will the inlay when that's done as i like the light color inside the dark teak, here is a paper mock up of the compass inlay. What do you guys think, leave the lighter color or stain it?
Here is the table so far, i removed the side trim pieces and cut the new top, still needs a finishing Sanding then varnish. I made a mistake on the veneer and i didn't have a big enough piece, so i had to use 2 pieces for the final top. I could have ordered a new one but i think with the varnish finish it will be fine.
Thanks guys, the dark trim pieces are going back on when I'm done varnishing the top. here it is mocked up. I put another coat of varnish on this morning, then a good sanding and a final coat and its done.
