  Crude oil is a global commodity. The price can change in a minute due to speculators and current events: i.e. Ukraine.  That event at the time did not threaten supply nor cause a sudden surge in demand.  Pure futures buyers.  

  
  

  Before anyone goes down the we need to “drill more”, there are thousands of wells drilled and capped just waiting for the best market prices. On top of that, the cost to drill / frack has gone up a lot (people and equipment) so they need to be north of ~$70/bbl before it is worth the effort.  Today these guys are sitting back and raking in money.  Why bother to produce more?  They learned their lesson in the last oil price crash where many went bankrupt.

  While the thread got sideways as a result of a certain individual, @Black_Diamond I think has a very intelligent, and spot on response.

  A young man watched as an elderly couple sat down to lunch at McDonald’s. He noticed that they had ordered just one meal, and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the old gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, etc, until each had exactly half. Then the old man poured half of the soft drink into the extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, but his wife just sat watching him.
