Grew up on water front in Queens NY and the nor’easters were almost always as bad as the hurricanes especially when it came to tidal flooding

I think we are expecting 4-5 feet of storm surge.

I went to take her out for a spin, first time since I got everything back together. She idled perfect out to the bay. I went to give her throttle and port engine (engine I worked on) couldn’t get past 3000 RPM and was popping. I went back to the dock and checked all the vacuum lines and plug wires, all was good. I also check where the distributor rotor was at TDC and it was right on the number 1 wire position. I put everything back and unfortunately while tightening down the cap a tab broke off the distributor. I barely put any force on it and it broke. I’m always cautious of this happening also! Luckily the cap was still able to go on snug. I’ll have to replace it. I went out again to check and still the same issue. I’m thinking I messed something up when I set the valve clearances, seems like they could be too tight. I’m pretty busy this weekend but hopefully beginning of next week I’ll pull the valve covers off and readjust the valves.

I’m 99% certain that I adjusted the valves too tight. I tightened the pushrods with a little drag for zero lash and tightened the nut 1 full turn. It should be zero drag on the push rods for zero lash and then 3/4 turn on the nut for preload. I made a cheat sheet to follow. They say 1 full turn is by the book for preload but 3/4 is better for running at higher RPM’s.

The valves that can be adjusted when #1 and #6 are at TDC are listed at the top.

Hopefully that does the trick. Didn't realize  you were going to be able to take it out for test run this years

I don’t know why she’s being so difficult this time around!! She’s being a bit@h to me!! 😂

I readjusted the valves today. It’s difficult to get the valve covers off and on when the engine is together but it’s doable. Ran her at the dock and still had the same issue, sputtering and popping at 3k RPM’s. I looked everything over intensely and found nothing obvious. I did see a couple of fuel injector clips not seated right, I fixed them. A last ditch effort, I reset TDC and pulled the distributor and inserted one tooth clockwise from what I originally had. She started right up, I throttled up and no sputtering and she went past 3k!!!! I untied her and went out to the bay. Throttled up and she took off, no popping! All of a sudden an alarm sounded, I lost oil pressure on the port engine! But the engine sounded fine. Pulled back and she was idling perfect. I brought the throttle up and she started popping and wanted to stall. I limped back to the dock on the starboard engine. Thinking the worst, I looked over everything again and see nothing. I started the engine and it sounds normal but still no oil pressure. Give it throttle and it starts popping and stalls. Again, thinking the worst and about to shop for a new engine. I’m thinking, the engine sounds fine but no oil pressure. I jumped back into the engine compartment and take a look at the distributor. It wasn’t secured down! It popped up out of the intake! I was like WTF! It’s hard to see with everything back together but when I installed the distributor clamp, I didn’t slide it forward to secure the base of the distributor. You can see it popped up in the last pic. Since the distributor runs the oil pump, with it popped out is why I didn’t see oil pressure. It needs to be seated all the way to seal a oil galley to provide full oil pressure. Luckily the oil pump must’ve provided some oil pressure since the engine sounded fine but not fully getting the the pressure it needs. Unfortunately i ran out of time but will be back tomorrow! And I will beat her, LoL!!

I did order a good used distributor with good tabs off of eBay. I should have it in a couple days. I can’t wait till this issue is behind me!⚓️

It was nice to know that the oil pressure alarm works 😂. But I did notice that there’s no alarm when I have the starboard engine off with the port engine running. That didn’t seem normal to me. Shouldn’t the alarm sound even though the starboard ignition was off? Or do you have to keep both ignition switches on even with one engine running?

That's interesting @aero3113..I never thought about what you're seeing but each motor i assume has its own pcm and various engine controls but how are they separated so you know what motor has issues? That kind of sounds like what you're dealing with if I'm reading right and not to many bourbons...I'm assuming your electronics would separate them for you. It sounds like one motor feeds the other to then produce warnings. Odd...

Yeah, something isn’t right. Both engines should be isolated and independent from each other. I used Ai to see if it could help me. Once I get everything sorted I’ll look into it.

    Thanks @Dream_Inn !
    Definitely a feeling of accomplishment.
Im glad it all worked out. I’m actually excited to pull the starboard intake to see if there’s any corrosion like the port side. I’m scheduled to be hauled out on the 14th. Planning on doing it when she’s out of the water.

We are pulling our boat on Saturday. Start clean up & back in the barn. Hopefully uneventful day. Forecast in central Illinois for Monday is 90. Might need to take a sick day

Cool down tob90? Nice...up until this past week we have been baking here in fl. I washed half the outside of the boat..feels like 100 to 110 most of the summer it seems like.

I looked into the throttle levers and adjustment of the throttle cable. I didn’t like how the port lever was hitting the mic cable. Turns out that both throttle levers were restricted by the VHF Radio! Port by the cord and starboard by the knob! Strange that I’m still able to reach 5000 RPM’s at full throttle (unless the tachs are off). I couldn’t make any adjustments that would make the butterfly go fully open without hitting the VHF. Only thing I can think of doing is make a shim to position the forward side of the base of the binnacle so it’s angled up. I didn’t get a chance to take her out by feel that I will get above 5k 🤷🏻‍♂️.

    VHF in place

    VHF Removed

Full throttle at both engines with the VHF in place.

I also received my replacement distributor with good screw tabs. I didn’t get to install it yet.

Could there be a cable adjustment at the binnicle? Maybe a different position on the lever to install the cable??

If it was me, I would move the VHF radio. Alternately, I would mount the binnacle on a 1/2” piece of starboard.

My 330 and 350 both have remote VHFs (brain box is under helm).

I didn’t think about just mounting the binnacle higher! Might have to go 1”. That’s probably the easiest thing to do.

@YYZRC what did you just cover the VHF space with a plate?

My 330/350 never had a VHF there. It was never cut out from the factory.
