2003 Rinker 342 having trouble coming on plane

dtwilson110dtwilson110 Member Posts: 35 ✭✭
My 342 has the 5.7 mags and the other weekend I had trouble planning out.  I did have full fuel tanks as well as a full water tank.  I also had 12 people on board.  I realize this is a lot of weight but my boat neighbors Four Winns 328 with 260hp engines came on plane easily with the same conditions.  I had the outdrives trimmed all the way down and had the trim tabs down as well.  I ended up sending people into the cabin to come on plane.  Any suggestions to help the boat plane out?

So, what prop pitch are you running?  If you have 24P like I did: too much.  22P is decent. I have that now. Considering 20P 4x4 props next.

You were pretty loaded up there.

Wow, that is a lot of people.  I'm not sure there is anything else you could do except move people forward.  Is your bottom clean?  A 328 is probably quite a bit smaller than your 342.  Especially if it's a newer one.

Black_Diamond I'm not sure what props I have.  I will have to take a look at the survey and see.  How much did the 4 22p props cost you?
  • dtwilson110dtwilson110 Member Posts: 35 ✭✭
Dream_Inn the boat is bottom painted and it stays fairly clean.  The 328 is about the same year as mine.  That boat gets on plane quick.  I know that he had some work done to the props.  I think I most likely have the 24p props.

A Four Winns is a lot lighter boat than a Rinker. 12 people is a lot of people plus you had a lot of weight with water and fuel. I could see you having to move people forward.  Did you have your tabs down before you powered up?

The 328 has less beam too.  I'm not surprised you had trouble with that many people aboard.

I think you up in the 19000# range with fuel water and people you can prop it down for that but how often do you think you will do that. I'm with Black_Diamond 22 pitch is a good all around size for 342 with 350mag'so. Also did it run fine when did get on plane.Moving wieght is part of being a captain.

@dtwilson110 - If you are wondering whether there's something wrong with your boat, nope.  That's exactly how every 342 with 5.7s performs.

Yep, I've got 350's with the 22p props and have no problem getting on plane with 4-6 people but with 12 adults I would be shocked if I didn't have trouble getting on plane. A change in prop will likely help but agree with the above that nothing is "wrong". Good luck.

raybo3 yes I had the tabs down before powering up.

reneechris14 I'm sure I won't have that may people on the boat all the time.  Over the weekend I had 7 adults and 4 kids on the boat and we got on plane without moving anyone.  Once on plane the boat moves right along

It's actually pretty impressive, considering that it's like having a Honda Accord parked on your boat.

    2200 pounds of people
    1800 pounds of fuel
    400 pounds of water
200 pounds of food, ice, drinks and gear

@Black_Diamond I have a question. I have a 2001 340 with 24P on her.  I constantly load my boat with 10 plus people plus coolers, we head down the lake park and party.  The 24P suck and I can never get on plane with loaded.  I have ordered the 22P and they are not on the boat yet but now you have me thinking I need the 20P.  Any advice?

Really depends on your current WOT rpm and your engine max rpm rating. Moving down in prop pitch 1" = +200 rpm to WOT. So the 24p to 22p will gain you 400 rpm. Reverse for increasing pitch.

The 350MAG MPI has a top rpm of 4,800-5,200 rpm. My 22P gets me to 4,800 rpm. A 20P would get me to 5,200 or so.

@Black_Diamond in my case I would never need or want to go WOT. My entire idea of boat is getting on plane and cruising at the slowest speed possible then parking and enjoying myself.  From what I have been reading (cause I know absolutely NOTHIING) the 20P would get me on plane quicker and hold a plane at slower speeds.  My boat always has 8 to 14 people on it, on the bright side, most of the people are girls weighing no more than a buck 20.

The WOT rpm is the 'gauge' for being propped correct. Too low you lug the engines. Too high and they spin up too much. The goal is to not run at WOT

Sorry, I can't get past the fact of 8-14 people, mostly girls weighing 120.  Hmmm...I think I'm becoming @Handymans342 !!

Dream_Inn is day dreaming, focus this about the prop. But then again 10 beautiful woman.

20 pitch prop will red line the motor if you don't pay attention, carefull some of what you are reading is 4 blade compared to 3 blade

I think in order to evaluate this properly and assess the situation accurately we need to see pictures of the girls to determine there approximate density and weight to appropriate capacity of your boat limit.

BTW, how many life vests did you have on board when you have 12+ passengers?

So just an update the Four Winns 328 that got on plane very easily just blew a motor.  I don't think he has the correct pitch props on his boat.  I think I will stay with what I have.  I don't want to over rev the engines.

  • CarsnmorellcCarsnmorellc Member Posts: 230 ✭✭
@Stodge I keep 16 life vest on my boat.  The most I have had on the boat at one time is 15.

:)  Good deal.  Most folks (on the boats I've done safety checks) have 4-6 PFDs aboard.

I have 10 PFD's onot board plus a couple for kids. If I ever have 10 people on my boat I'm getting off, it's supposed to be peaceful on the boat. B)B)
