Steve, I agree with your comment about exaggeration. Some of the weather warnings - for example, where I live,  - have been so ridiculously exaggerated the past few years that few people even pay attention to the red TV screen warnings. I thought I heard some of the same type of comments from newscasters in the U.S. regarding Irma. I hoped they were wrong but didn't want to say anything. Still waiting for a report from some friends who own property in the Turks. What I have heard so far is that it was not nearly as bad as the dire warnings. Unfortunately, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas etc. did get pounded.

Ras, hopefully just a strong breeze!
  • rasburyrasbury Member Posts: 8,962 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, a bot more than a strong breeze- we had 90 + winds and a lot of rain, power has been off for some time. Lots of branches in the yard, fencing down but no house damage that I can see with a flashlight. We have a curfew until 7pm tonight so will check the boat- this thing did a Charlie for sure and only proves these storms can not be accurately predicated. Waiting to see how the rest of us made out...

Not too sure about the exaggeration. I think they give worst case scenario then hope for the least. I think they would rather have "we could of had this but thank God we only got that".......... And of course ratings and $$$.......

I would want the worst case rather than best case. It got a lot of people out of there. Keep in mind, the news was reporting on what they were being told by the hurricane center and the state officials. The news organizations weren't making money from commercials. Most of them didn't run any during the height of the storm.

I'm no complaining about the service they provide just that people take it for gospel. They don't look at that cone and they don't consider how inaccurate beyond 5 days. It's just a guide and this one proved it! I have a Genny we can run our air and 20 gallons of fuel and plenty of fuel...

Ras, you can always siphon fuel out of the boat if you need more! :)

So I am not allowed on the island where the boat slip is at this time since its still under an evacuation order. I was able to verify that the boat is still in the slip and floating as of this morning!

@JasonA - that is fantastic news!!  I was thinking about you when I saw all that water that went out of the bay, and then it all coming back in.  I'm sure you are anxious, but it's floating is great news!

Did it go behind you instead of a hit? That's the way it works, as soon as it pulls away, the weather is usually very nice!

Well that is great news Handy!!  Just plug in that generator and then you can put the boat down! :)  Right now it's not looking good for Jacksonville.

My brother lives in Jacksonville beach on the inter-coastal, the water came right up to his pool and stopped. A bunch of trees down and lost the screens over his pool. Very lucky! Hopefully this video will post.
